Pumpkin Fest, October 23, 2010

Everyone had a great time at Pumpkin Fest. The Society provided carnival style games for the children, Sam Morales designed an incredible diorama, and his Pinata was a hit - just slightly less popular than the pumpkin roll itself. Click on the photo to see all of the photos from Pumpkin Fest.

The Society is the recipient of a grant awarded by Megan Smolenyak of Honoring Our Ancestors in the amount of $450.00 for the purchase of a sheet-fed scanner. Volunteers are in the process of scanning the Lawrence Wood Collection and will be making it available on the website. This project will take many volunteers hours. After scanning and verifying the scans additional volunteers are needed to assist in indexing the documents. Click here if you'd like to see a "raw" sample of the project.

Mosaic Star Quilt
Circa 1830-1860

Made in Otto, NC February 2008

I was custom crafted by Nancilee Kathryn Brown Dills (President of Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild) to honor the memory of Macon County's quilters of the past. Among other titles, I am known as a Mosaic Star Quilt . A mosaic quilt is actually any quilt formed by piecing cloth into a pleasing design much like in a stained glass window pattern. The style was very popular in the America of the mid 1800's. My particular pattern is redrawn from a quilt made in 1831. I consist of 2000 individual pieces of cotton cloth arranged in twenty squares; I may be machine washed and dried.(medium settings) . The material is a reproduction of the fabric available during the war between the states. Quilting provided a home necessity and, particularly in that tragic time, provided a venue for artistic expression. Enjoy...
